The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton, TD, and the Irish Development Authority (IDA) Ireland, today led the opening ceremony of a new Qualcomm Incorporated Global Technology Delivery Centre in Cork. The new centre will support Qualcomm’s global operations teams in the delivery of best-in-class IT solutions, and aims to tap into local Cork and regional talent, creating new job opportunities for the area. Qualcomm is also in discussions with IDA Ireland on the potential establishment of a Security and Encryption R&D centre through Qualcomm Mobile and Computing (QMC), a business unit of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated.
IDA Ireland welcomed the initial arrival of Qualcomm to Cork in April, when it posted the first of its vacancies.
“Driving continued employment growth in the ICT sector is at the heart of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs, and in the 18 months since we launched that plan we have seen major progress with 3000 jobs now being created every month across the private sector. The challenge now is to build on and accelerate that trend,” said Minister Bruton. “Today’s announcement that Qualcomm, the world leader in 3G, 4G and next-generation wireless technologies, is creating new jobs in a high-end technology centre in Cork is a major boost for the country and a further endorsement of the strengths that we have built up. I wish the Qualcomm team every success with this new endeavour, and I am determined to ensure that with strong implementation of our plan we can continue this progress and create the jobs we need”.

The opening ceremony was attended by several Qualcomm executives, including Peggy Johnson, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and president, global market development, who said, “For more than 25 years, Qualcomm ideas and inventions have driven the evolution of digital communications. Ireland’s successful track record with world-leading technology companies, availability of highly-skilled, technical talent along with a pro-business environment, all played a significant part in Qualcomm’s decision to locate in Cork.”
